In February [... 2004] the prestigious International Songwriting Competition (ISC) announced its winner. After 11,000 songs had been received from 60 different countries Moana Maniapoto was announced as the overall winner for her song 'Moko'. Now she's been honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for her services to music and everything kaupapa Maori... here's what Moana had to say about the competition win...
'"I took my demo to Simon Holloway and waited for him to laugh. He didn't. What he did do was come up with a real cool jazzy beat to lay underneath it all...[The win is] good for Simon who produced 'Moko'... but also co-wrote 'Te Po' with me (which also made the semi-finals). I love working with him. He is a fantastic producer. I'm quite shy when it comes to my writing and Simon always makes me feel comfortable."
